The flame-retardance of polyethylene filled with calcium hydroxide was preliminary investigated through Oxygen Index, SEM. The result indicated that the flame-retardance of polyethylene with calcium hydroxide was improved. It is hard to disperse calcium hydroxide in the polymers because of their completely different interfacial property, how to modify surface of calcium hydroxide is necessary. We obtained modified calcium hydroxide by adding surface activation during slaking of calcium oxide and came to know that the oil-absorbed value, viscosity, water-absorption ratio and sedimentation volume of calcium hydroxide were decline. Considering the influence of reaction conditions such as the content of silane (KH-570) , reaction temperature, reaction time during modifying surface of calcium hydroxide, more experiments had been done. Experiments told that the oil-absorbed value and viscosity were decreased to the minimum when the content of silane (KH-570) was 3 %, reaction time of 1 h at 50℃。At the same time, capsule calcium hydroxide was synthesized by the phenol-formaldehyde resin in-situ formed from phenol and formaldehyde during slaking of calcium oxide. The samples were characterized with TEM, FTIR, XRD, DSC. Experimental results demonstrated that samples obtained under the conditions of reactant 20% and reaction time of 2 h at 80℃ showed the best properties. The properties of polyvinyl chloride filled with capsule calcium hydroxide were analyzed. Results showed that both the thermal stability and compatibility were improved.
