The implementation of ambient air quality prediction could provide comprehensive information on changes of it in time or in the future with accuracy. And it plays an important role in promoting publics' life quality, respecting and enhancing their right to know how ambient air quality is at present or in the future.Chaos theory has been applied in many fields such as acoustics, optics, overflow and chaotic changes in chemical reactions. In China, the quantitative research of the environmental system by chaos theory is still at the primary stage, there are less research thesises on it. It is significative that chaos theory is applied in ambient air quality prediction. The primary conceptions of chaos and its theory are reviewed in the start. The ambient air pollutants of SO2, NO2, PM10 in heating season and non-heating season compose six time series which are studied by Chaos theory. The properiate delay time of each time series is calculated by self-correlation function method and its phase space is reconstructed. The saturation correlation dimension, maximum Lyapunov exponent and Kolmogorov entropy, which are the important chaotic attribute of a time series, are extracted from each time series to identify their chaotic properties. The result shows that each time series belongs to chaotic series, and the phase diagram of each time series is drawn.Based on chaos theory, the longest theoretical prediction time Tm of each time...
