This thesis was divided into two sections. One was the review, and the other was the research. The first section is focused on the study and development of the modification of the chemiluminescence (CL) reaction micro-environment and its analytical applications. The second section is on the study of the electrochemical modification of the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reaction micro-environment at graphite electrode surface and a new idea to improve the ECL analytical performances by modifying electrochemically the ECL reaction micro-environment was applied.Electrochemiluminescence (also called electrogenerated chemiluminescence and abbreviated ECL) involves the generation of species at electrode surfaces that then undergo electron-transfer reactions to form excited states that emit light. In general, the ECL reaction procedure concerns two steps: one is electrochemical reaction, and the other is the subsequent CL reaction of the electrogenerated species with themselves or with co-existing ones in the bulk solution. From the study and development of the modification of the chemiluminescence (CL) reaction micro-environment and its effects on the CL analytical performances, almost of all research concern that suitable micro-phase interface or CL reaction micro- space was utilized in CL analysis, and especially to the analytical application of the surfactant or the supramolecule. The use of micellar enhanced CL or supramolecule effect to influence the polarity, viscosity and pH of microcosmic and local environment in the CL reaction widen the application of CL analysis. However, up to now, no work concerned the use of the chemically modified electrode technique to create a suitable CL reaction microenvironment for improving the analytical performances of ECL analysis from the point of the CL reaction. In this paper, by using the chemically modified electrode technique, a new idea to improve the ECL analytical performances from the point of the CL reaction requirement based on modifying chemically the CL reaction microenvironment was proposed. Based on the Ru(bpy)32+-ECL system, we studied its analytical applications.
