As an important branch of Rapid Prototyping (RP), Direct Laser Metal Sintering (DLMS) is used for manufacturing metal parts by scanning metal powder based on the process of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). In this paper, a series of experiments are carried out with DLMS for Nickel-based metal powder materials, and the effect of process parameters in sample quality was investigated and analyzed. The main works are as following:(1) The effect mechanism of laser in metal powder and the nucleation mechanism are analyzed.(2) The process parameters that affect the quality of sintering parts are investigated and the way how they affect is clear. The power of laser and scanning speed play an evident influence in the structure, rigidity and density of parts. The rigidity and density, and the size of structure increase with the increasing of power. At the same time, the size of structure is finer and the rigidity is improved while scanning speed is higher. The classic parameters for material of Ni-based alloy F105 are: P=900w,V=1200mm/min,L=0.5mm,δ=0.4mm,D=1.0mm.(3) There are many flaws in Direct Laser Metal Sintering, such as the high remnants stress, micro-hole and micro-crack in sintering parts. In order to solving those problems, the programming of scanning paths is put forward, and several parts are prepared with different scanning paths respectively. The following conclusion is educed: the parts produced with short-side scanning path and same scanning direction have the minimum structure, the rigidity of parts prepared by short-side and same direction scanning path is highest, and the density of parts produced with the vertical scanning path is maximal.(4) Some required-shape metal parts with certain mechanical strength are sintered successfully with powerful laser.
