| Region is the primary scale for the researchs of global environment change. The research on regional environment change is one of fundamental tasks to achieve sustainable development of regions. During the rapid urbanization, the process of the regional environment change becomes more complex due to the combined influence of natural and human factors. As more and more attention has been paid on the environmental and ecological functions of the city, it is of great significance to research the process of regional environment change and its significant effect on the urban system.Based on the individual factor analysis of water environment evolution and the multi-factors integrated geographical assessment of regional environment condition, this paper discussed the temporal and spatial trtend of regional water environment and gave integrated assessment of environment change on region-scale. The coastal areas of Shanghai were choosed as the samples, including Baoshan District, Pudong New District and Nanhui District. Firstly, it is because of the complexity of the environment change in the coastal area. Secondly, in recent 20 years the coastal areas of Shanghai have been in the process of rapid urbanization. Thirdly, the samples with characteristics of different urbanization level, urbanization process and urbanizing mode, are helpful to conduct the comparative analysis of the water environment changes of the areas with different urbanizing mode.This paper studied the process and characteristics of the regional water quality change in recent 20 years systematically, expounded the spatial distribution characteristics of the water quality, and discussed the coupling mechanism between the water quality change and the urbanization. Based on the integrated geographical assessment, the paper advanced the approach and index system for assessing the process and extends of the regional environment change.
