Gobiocypris rarus is an endemic cyprinid in China. As one of the recommended test organisms in the Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals, G. rarus is being widely used in studies of ecotoxicology and other research fields. In this study, two reference toxicants, chromium and pentachlorophenol (PCP) were selected as test chemicals, acute and subchronic toxicity test were performed to estimate validity of the methods. Acute toxicity test and embryo-yolk sac stage larva toxicity test were then used to evaluate the toxicity of sediment in Donghu Lake. In order to compare the sensitivity to chemicals amomg G. rarus, Xiphophorus helleri and Danio rerio, acute toxicity tests of chromium and PCP were conducted. The results are as follows:1. The acute toxicity test of chromium and PCP on G. rarus were run 6 times, the results performed high intra-laboratory reproducibility. The 96h LC50 of chromium was 81.0±2.0 mg /L, while 96h LC50 of PCP was 101.5±3.6μg /L, indicating that G. rarus was very sensitive to the two toxicants. Through the experiments above, the method of acute toxicity test using G. rarus recommended by the Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals was proved stable and reliable.2. Acute toxicity tests of chromium and PCP on G. rarus, X. helleri and D. rerio were conducted under the same experimental conditions in the same laboratory. The results showed that the 96h LC50 of chromium on G. rarus, X. helleri and D. rerio were 83.0mg/L, 51.3 mg/L and 45.3mg/L,while the 96h LC50 of PCP were 102.1μg...
