Field-activated and Pressure-assisted Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (FAPASHS) is a new efficient and economical technology to prepare gradient composite materials. It overcomes the limitation of traditional SHS that could not be applied to prepare low exothermal reaction systems composite materials. The effects of Joule heating and mass transferring caused by external electric field will keep the reaction running by overcoming the limitations of thermodynamics and kinetics; And a external pressure will limit the present of cavity and increase the density of products by rearranging grains and making liquid phase fill the cavities and intergranular cracks. The processing has combined SHS with quick pressure as a whole, so the process of synthesis and solidification of the products can be accomplished at the same time. It is characterized as energy-efficient, simple, novel and practical. Therefore, it is feasible to prepare gradient materials with high melting point, wear and corrosion resistance. In this paper, it was TiC+15%Ni+20%Fe system composite materials and TiC+15%Ni+x%Fe system Functionally Gradient Materials (FGM) that were prepared by FAPASHS.
