In this paper the study on biodegradability of terephthalic acid(TA) by activated sludge and soil microorganism was introduced in three respects-—the biodegradation characteristic, biodegradation rate and metabolic pathway. The results show that terephthalic acid can be biodegraded rapidly by microorganism and the higher terephthalic acid concentration can be born, too. The biodegradation rate of TA is accorded with Michaelic-Menten model. The biodegraded products from terephthalic acid by activated sludge were identified as m-hydroxybenzoic acid and protocatechuic acid respectively and the metabolic pathway of terephthalic acid was proposed.
