The demand of powder metallurgy product is growing fast and the request of the accuracy of compacting die as well as the product quality is more and more high along with the development of the automobile industry. The traditional design method appears incompetent for the newly demand, and consequently, the desire for professional and intelligent powder metallurgy compacting die CAD system is growing rapidly.This paper mainly concern the project of "Development of mould& die CAD/CAM technology for the key accessories of the automobile", which come from Guangxi Scientific and Technical Office. Applying the theory of design based on assembly model and Using develop tool of VC++6.0, SQL Server2000, UG/Open toolkit, a intelligent CAD system for metallurgy compacting die was developed by further development based on UG software. Main contents of the paper showed as follow:1. The development technique of mould & die CAD system is concluded. the advantages and disadvantages of development based on parametric design, development based on feature modeling and development based on assembly model is analyzed.2. Structure of compacting die and it design principium & method was analyzed on the foundation of studying powder metallurgy compacting principium along with primary effect factors of compacting quality.3. Assembly modelling method, concept of assembly model, imformation structure of assembly model, expression of assembly model and assembly modeling method was lucubrated and was applied to analyze the system. Theory of radiate assembly model was detailed and was applied to build up Powder metallurgy compacting assembly model. And applicatiom skills of using assembly model for design primary parts, frame of die and assembling is researched.4. Fuction model of the system was investigated by IDEFO technique. Key techniques include Objects identify technique, Parametric design technique, Data manage technique and Data connect technique,Variant design based on assembly model technique and auto-assemble based on mating conditions technique were detailed.5. Skills of further development based on UG software were discussed. Three program skeletons building skills were showed, process of developing system was described and the key parts of the program was introduced.6. Finally, the system was introduced by case.
