Mefenacet has attracted much experimental interests because it exhibits high effective as herbicide. Previous experiments have shown that the mefenacet maybe the most outstanding herbicide for crops. Therefore, to explore the synthesis methods of mefenacet is rather important, which is still called for experimental devoting.In this paper, the synthesis method of mefenacet was introduced. The herbicide was prepared by the reaction of 2-chloro-benzothiazole with 2-hydroxy-N-methyl-N-phenylacetamide, while both of the reactants were synthesized respectively by chlorination of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and chloroacetyl. Four intermediates, Mc, Ma, Mh, and Mb, are formed in the synthesis process for mefenacet. For each intermediate we optimized its reaction conditions and get relatively high yields comparing to other methods. The yield of mefenacet reached to 73-75%. The infrared spectroscopy, the gas phase spectroscopy, and the liquid phase spectroscopy were applied to test the synthesized mefenacet and its intermediates, as a result that the synthesized mefenacet and its intermediates are in agreement with the standard samples.
