Petroleum pollution is one of the principal contaminations in water environment. Detecting its concentration of oil in water is essential to evaluating pollution fast and correctly. Now there are many kinds of methods to detect the concentration of mineral oil in water, such as Weight method, Ultra-Violet spectroscopy, fluorescence spectrophotometry and Infrared spectrophotometry, etc. The Infrared spectro- photometry was regulated as our national standard in 1996. All of the principles and operation approaches are introduced including the methods'advantages and disadvantages. For almost all of the methods, samples are needed gathering to the laboratory, and then being treated and measured. There are many questions in these methods, such as storage, transportation, etc. If the sample treating time is long, the low boiling-point composition will be volatilized, and the measuring accuracy is influenced negatively. So monitoring oil online is very important. Now the online technique of monitoring oil content in sewage is applied more in shipping with high sensitivity and high precision required. The light-scattering principle or fluorescence spectro-photometry is adopted in the field. All these monitoring methods needed intelligent equipment. It is difficult to be applied widely. As for the electrical resistance method, the solvent extraction is not needed, so the environment pollution is avoided and the method seems more convenient. This method is considered promising in the field of in-situ detection for oil in water. The method's disadvantage is that the sensitivity is not good and the electrodes are difficult to be cleaned and re-used. The lipophilic film is needed to make a regeneration after every measurement. So the methods hasn't been commercialized. In the present thesis, different electrode's electrochemical behavior of oil in sea water are studied with intention to optimize the electric resistance method.Based on the variety of the form of oil existing in water, floating oil and disperse oil...
