Cemented carbide has become the main cutting tools in the place of high speed steels. Since cemented carbide was invented, cobalt is the main binder all along. Nickel and cobalt belong to iron family metal in the periodic table of elements. They have similar density, melting point, atomic radius and physical-chemical properties. Research on binders substituting Co began in the 1930s, and it was to avoid the patent at that time and later for the rareness of cobalt. Nickel reserves is seventy times than cobalt, and it is less expensive than cobalt. In this way, Nickel is regard as the prime substitution for cobalt. The research of cemented carbide with nickel binder will help to settle the problem of cobalt rareness and reduce the cost of cemented carbide, hence has good market prospect and social benefit.Cemented carbide with nickel binder has good toughness, but the hardness and wear resistance are relatively lower than Cemented carbide with cobalt binder. At the present, two methods are used to enhance the hardness of cemented carbide with nickel binder. One is partially substitution of cobalt, the other is complex alloying. However, cemented carbide with nickel binder is still used when the properties required is low, or in special occasion such as mining tools, wear resistant parts and non-magnetic alloys. Cutting tools are typical...
