The hydroxylation of steroids by fungal or bacterial biocatalysts has been known for many years. C11β-hydroxylation is the most important and the most indifficent bioreaction in steroids response. Though cortisone can't response to body, it must be convert into hydrocortisone by enzyme in body. Nowdays the study on C11β-hydroxylation for steroids have a fast development.Hydrocortisone is one of the most important steroids drugs, it have important effect in curing rheumatism, Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, hypersusceptibility and so on, it also be used in salving examination, shock and extremly infection. Hydrocortisone is a basic steroid drug and intermediate for the synthesis of high quality steroid drugs, and is the main steroids drug in national and international drugs market.Up to date, two organisms of industrial fungi, Absidia orchidis and Curvularia lunata, has been used for industrial production of hydrocortisone for several decades at home and abroad. Nowdays only Absidia orchidis was used in china, but besides hydrocortisone, several by-products, such as 11α-OH and 14α-OH existed in the fermention system. So the net yield of hydrocortisone was't more than 45% (RSA).
