The denseβ-tricalcium phosphate/β-calcium pyrophosphate (β-TCP/β-CPP) composite ceramics were prepared in this experiment. The ratio of the two phases and sintering temperature were changed in order to analyze the sintering and mechanical properties ofβ-TCP/β-CPP ceramics. At the same time, the effect of the Na in theβ-TCP/β-CPP ceramic was studied.The open porosity and bulk density were tested and the sintering and mechanical properties ofβ-TCP/β-CPP ceramics were analyzed. The microstructure and crystal structure were analyzed by the techniques of SEM and XRD. Degradation behavior ofβ-TCP/β-CPP ceramics were tested by soaking in Tris solution from 1day to 20 days. The weight loss was tested after soaking in Tris solution.The sintering property ofβ-TCP ceramic was improved by adding with 5wt%β-CPP. The open porosity was decreased when added with 5wt%β-CPP. However it was increased when the content ofβ-CPP was higher than a certain amount. The results of degradation showed that theβ-TCP/β-CPP ceramics had great potential as a biodegradable bone substitute than pureβ-TCP andβ-CPP ceramics.Due to the addition of Na introduced the liquid phase at high temperature, the sintering property ofβ-TCP/β-CPP ceramic was further improved. At the same time the degradation velocity ofβ-TCP/β-CPP was improved with the addition of Na.
