The alkylation of p–cresol with isobutylene over Hβzeolites has been studied in a fixed bed reactor under normal pressure. The effect of Hβzeolite modified by ion exchange with Mn, Ni, Ce and their catalytic performance on the reaction were investigated. The influence of reaction conditions (reaction temperature, material feed ratio, space velocity) on the alkylation was evaluated. The result indicated that by using different metal modifier Mn, Ni, and Ce, the acitity and pore size of the catalysts changed, hence the activity and product selectivity of the catalysts can be changed. The Mn–Hβzeolite had better properties than the other modified catalysts. The Hβzeolite were modified by both metal Ni–Zn,Mn–Cu,Ni–Mg. The conversion of p–cresol has decreased, the selectivity of 2–tert–butylp–cresol has increased distinctly. In the three catalysts, Ni–Zn–Hβzeolite has the best catalytic performance. The process for alkylation of p–cresol with isobutylene over Hβzeolites has been optimized. The suiTable le reaction conditions are as follow: reaction temperature 125℃, isobutylene:p–cresol=3:1, WHSV 2h﹣1. Under the optimized reaction conditions, the conversion of p–cresol reached 70.2 % , the yield of 2–tert–butylp–cresol reached 67.3%, the selectivity of 2–tert–butylp–cresol was 93.6%.The research work of alkylation of p–cresol with isobutylene over Hβzeolites and modified Hβzeolite , carried out on the fixed reactor may overcome the tranditional catalysts and avoid corrosion and pollution problems. This new art has novelty and industry value.
