Production of benzoic acid by liquid-phase oxidation of benzaldehyde by oxygen had been studied in a multi sieve-plate reaction-extraction horizontal column. The oxidation of benzaldehyde and the extraction of benzoic acid had been integrated in one reactor. Oxygen sprayed out from sprayers inside the column. Oxygen worked either as agitated gas or as reactant.Partition coefficient of benzoic acid in two liquid phases had been studied and the linear relation of phase equilibrium of the concentration of benzoic acid had been found.The integrated process of oxidation and extraction were carried out in different conditions. The results showed that reaction rate didn't increase with the increase of superficial gas velocity because the increased gas bubble rate could reduce the contact time of gas liquid phases, and gas bubble also carried a lot of heat. Temperature increasing can improve the integrated efficiency. The extraction efficiency increased with the increase of the superficial gas velocity and reduced with the increase of the superficial velocity of water phase. Increasing the concentration of benzaldehyde in organic phase was propitious to the increase of the oxidation rate, but when the concentration reached a certain value, its effect on oxidation rate was gradually minished.Axial dispersion model of the concentration of benzoic acid had been built up. The effect of mass transfer dynamics of oxygen in organic phase had been considered in this model. The distribution of the concentration of benzoic acid had been obtained by this model, the relative error of the process simulation was no more than 5.5%, which shows a good consistent with experiments.The research on the integrated process is helpful to improve the production process of benzoic acid by liquid-phase oxidation of toluene by air.
