The issue of cutting difficult-to-machine materials is an important research aspect in metal cutting area. In diesel locomotive manufacturing, quite a number of materials belong to difficult-to-machine materials. With the increasing requirement of locomotive performance, the problem becomes much sharper. Wheel Steel—a kind of special material that applied to wheel in locomotive and rolling stock railway industry, is a main consumer in diesel locomotive manufacturing. As a result, the research on mechanism and process in cutting Wheel Steel is of great importance.In this paper, systematic research on mechanism and process of Wheel Steel cutting has been made by a great number of theories and experiments for the first time. The mechanism during Wheel Steel cutting, such as cutting force, vibration, tool wear, surface integrity and chip deformation have been studied profoundly. The scientific ways on how to choose cutting tools and parameters suitably when machining Wheel Steel are provided. The process of Wheel Steel cutting is improved under production practice, it also attains a great of achievement.Main research contents in this paper include:1. The present status and developing tendency on machining, the characteristic of Wheel Steel cutting and the present producing situation of monoblock steel wheel have been stated in detail. At the same time, some advanced machining methods have also been summarized.2.
