In recent years, there has been a great practical interest in the grafting of vinyle monomers to polyolefin for broadening its usage. In this article, a novel method, solvothermal preparation of maleic anhydride grafting polyethylene(PE) copolymer was studied. Fourier transformation infrared spectrum (FT-IR) proved that maleic anhydride could be grafted onto the PE backbone successfully. The influences of the reaction parameters on the grafting copolymerization, e.g. the concentration of the initiator, MAH and HDPE content, reaction time, reaction temperature, comonomer and different solvents were also studied in detail. Further studies found that maleic anhydride could be grafted onto HDPE in both good solvents and poor solvents, which was much different from traditional solution grafting methods, and high grafting degree can be obtained in good solvent.
