Expanded bed adsorption (EBA), with the merits of both fluidized bed and packed bed adsorption, due to its simplicity as a single step operation, lower back mixing, cost reduction of purification, is a novel technique and is becoming increasingly popular. Detailed investigations, such as expansion ratio, hydrodynamic performance, separating efficiency, are of great importance in optimum design, and understanding, analyzing and predicting the complex absorption performance in EBA. However, the accuracy description of its characteristic is still a difficult task and the application is full of the uncertainty. Detailed investigation on the radial distribution of adsorbent particles will be discussed in this paper.In this paper, Styrene-DVB D301R was used as solid phase and the liquid phase was tap water. The solid holdups were measured by using an improved micro-conductivity probe technique and the CCD measuring system in a 0.15 m ID and 4.35 m high liquid-solid expanded bed. The local radial solid holdup increased with the value of the r/R and reached the maximum when the value of r/R was about 0.75-0.85.In addition, a radial distribution model of solid holdups in a liquid-solid expanded bed was developed on the basis of the core-annulus model. Good agreement is obtained between the model predictions and the experimental values of the radial distributions. The average relative error between the predictions and measured data is 16.33%. The results shows that the model could predict the radial local solid holdup in a fully fluidization region of an expanded bed preferably, but the present model was valid in predicting the radial distributions of local solid holdup under the range of between 1 and 20.
