| In this study, mesophase pitch was prepared from medium pitch with thermal polymerization and solvent extraction for carbon containing refractories. The preparation conditions were investigated systematically and the optimum parameters were finded. The prepared mesophase pitch, coal tar pitch, treated pitch and newly binder were studied by the structure and performance with FT-IR spectrum, elementary analysis, TGA analysis, SEM and polarized light microscope. The microstructure of carbonized prepared mesophase pitch and newly binder was scanned by polarized light microscope. The abroad liquid pitch was preliminary analysed and some profitable experiment were progressed to prepare liquid pitch binder.The results indicates that the thermal polymerization parameters have a direct effect to the coking value and the mesophase yield of the treated pitches. Along with the increase of thermal polymerization temperature and the prolong of the holding time, the yield of mesophase pitch and the coking value increases within limits. Analysis indicated that the optimum parameters values of thermal polymerization were 3.5°Cmin-1, 440°C, and 10 h for the heating rate, the treatment temperature, and the holding time, respectively.The FT-IR analysis and the elementary analysis showed that the prepared mesophase pitch has a similar chemical structure to abroad newly binder. The elementary analysis showed that the two products also have approximate C/H value. The TGA analysis showed that the two products have approximate weight loss temperature range and weight loss rate. The SEM analysis showed that the two products have similar microstructure and carbonized microstructure. The polarized light micrographs showed that the two products have different carbonized structure. We prepared liquid pitch with prepared mesophase pitch and market sold environment friend solvent. The viscosity analysis of the prepared liquid binder indicated that the solvent S-2000C has better dissolubility, and the choice of the assistant of the solvent such as plasticiser, solubilizer and tackifier would be a crucial factor. |
