In order to solve the problems of the solid state sintering between Cu and Fe (such as hard-to-sinter, narrow controllable technology, instability of sintering), which were the main elements of metallic binder diamond products, mechanical alloying (MA) was introduced to improve the solid state sinter character of Fe-Cu compound powders and the performance of the iron-base binder diamond products. The change of the particle size, grain size, crystal structure, homogeneity degree of the powders components and the stored energy in the process of MA was analyzed by investigating the compound powders of Fe-Cu under different milling times. And the influence of mechanical alloying on the solid state sintering of Fe-Cu compound powders was also studied by research the metallurgical structure, density, hardness and bend strength of the sinterThe test results showed that the particle and the grain size were refined, the homogeneity degree of the components was improved, after the Fe-Cu compound powders milled. And the large quantity of defect energy, distortion energy and surface energy were accumulated in the Fe-Cu powders. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiment found that after milled 30 hours, the heat release of the powders at 900℃, 1809.20J/g, was about 27 times than that of which had not been milled (65.62J/g). By analyzing the sinter (sintered at 900℃) of Fe-Cu compound powders (milled 30h), it was shown that the metallurgical structure of was fine, the component was uniform and the bond strength was strong. The density, hardness and bend strength were improved by 9.7%, 84.6% and 51.2%, respectively. The abrasion ratio of the diamond saw blade, which made by the MA processed (30h) Fe-Cu compound powders, was about 5 times than that of which had not been treated by the MAprocess. The results indicate that the solid state sintering of Fe-Cu compound powders was accelerated evidently, the performance of sinter was improved and the abrasive property of diamond saw blade was enhanced remarkably by MA process.
