Montmorillonite catalyst is a new catalytic material with large surface area, unique pore structure,green , more higher activity and very low cost .it is used in a number of important industries, especially in petroleum processing, chemical industry and environmental science. The basic structures and properties of montmorillonite were introduced in this paper. First, the montmorillonite was modified with H2SO4 to increasing the cation exchange ability of montmorillonite; Second, select the best support to load Ce(SO4)2 to achieve the catalyst which have the best catalytic activity The characterizations of catalyst were determined by XRD, FT-IR and TG-DSC. The experimental results indicate that the H2SO4 concentration, Ce(SO4)2 concentration and reaction time greatly affect the formation of catalyst.Montmorillonite catalyst were prepared by H2SO4 and Ce(SO4)2 , using raw Ca-montmorillonite in HeNan province as the starting clay. The result of XRD shows that When the concentration of H2SO4 was 30%, the concentration of Ce(SO4)2 was 0.025mol/l, the reaction temperature was 90100℃and the time of acidification was 8 hour, Catalyst with large pore structure (d001=3.56nm) was obtained, and its thermal stability was up to 600℃. The Diphenylethane was synthesized by using Montmorillonite catalyst, the disadvantages of the traditional technology when using oil of vitriol was eliminated. The experimental results indicate that the best reaction conditions including that the ratio of the xylol and styrene is 1:7 ,the amount of the catalyst is WB%= 12.5% of the styrene,the reacting time is 3.5h and the experimental temperature is120℃. The productivity can reach 83.3% and the reusing ratio of the catalyst is more higher, the traditional technology was ameliorated which conforming to the developing tendency of the green chemical industry.Compared with other results in this field in this nation, our results have been improved in different degree .
