2-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone (for short, β-methylnaphthoquinone, as well as being called vitamin K3) is an important intermediate in the synthesis of vitamin K. It has been largely used as feed additive. In the traditional process, β-methylnaphthalene is oxidized with solution of chromic acid to give β-methylnaphthoquinone. However, a great deal of waste water with chromium will be produced in the process, which is very serious to environment. At the same time, the raw material consumption is great, which lead to the high production cost. Furthermore, by-product 6-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone will be produced, which is difficult to be separated completely and be utilized solely. We study a novel and environmentally benign synthetic route for β-methylnaphthoquinone. Synthesis of β-methylnaphthoquinone without any catalyst in the CH3COOH-H2O2 system by oxidation of β-methylnaphthalene is researched. We have discussed the feasibility of the technology. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, the quantity of glacial acetic acid, the quantity of hydrogen peroxide and the quantity of magnesium sulfate anhydrous on the results of experiment are investigated. On basis of single factors, a quadratic orthogonal regression design is arranged to study the effect of the three factors such as reaction temperature, reaction time, and the quantity of hydrogen peroxide on the results of experiment. Optimal test synthetic conditions and a quadratic regression model were obtained. This model is tested reliable and effective. There are some advantages in the process such as no environmental pollution nearly, simple technology, moderate operating condition, raw material easy to gain, etc. It will be a green synthetic route for synthesis of β-methylnaphthoquinone.
