The present condition of municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment was introduced. By comparing with the domestic and foreign disposal methods of solid waste, it was pointed out that MSW gasification and melting combustion technology has the characteristics of little secondary pollution, completely harmless and higher resource degrees and so on. So the experiment based on MSW self-heat combustion theory was designed and hot model tests for gasification and combustion of MSW in the shaft furnace under the condition of co-current and contra-current were performed. Furthermore, in order to offer parameters to design and operate the incinerator, it was performed to study the characteristics of combustion of seven kinds of typical MSW by the experiments of thermogravimetric analyzer.By the test of self-heat combustion of MSW in the shaft furnace, The results are as follows:(1)The process of combustion can be separated into three phases, named thedrying process, the combustion of volatile and the combustion of fixedcharcoal.(2) The heating rate of the temperature of particle bed under the condition of co-current is higher than under the condition of contra-current.(3) The temperature of the underpart of the reactor under the condition of co-current is much higher than under the condition of contra-current.(4) The poisonous gases such as CO,NO_X and SO_X are produced under the condition of co-current are littler than under the condition of contra-current.From the above-mentioned experiment results, it can be concluded that the combustion of MSW in the shaft furnace under the condition of co-current is more suitable for gasification and melting combustion technology than under the condition of contra-current.
