In order to investigate the characteristic about staged multi-phase anaerobic digestion of anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR), a ABR with six compartments was used to do some research about the distinction between Hybrid ABR and ABR, and to examine the effect of start-up, organic and hydraulic shock loads, sludge methane activity (SMA).Most importantly, the performance of a pilot-scale ABR treating effluent from a beet sugar industry was investigated. It was found that (1) HABR had the better performance than ABR when starting-up and increasing organic loads. (2)The compartmentalized ABR consisted of three general zones (acidification, methanetion and a buffer zone), which was different from the organic loads. (3)ABR was extremely stable to organic and hydraulic shock loads and maintained the high COD removal efficiencies. Hence, ABR was suitable for treating the industrial effluents which were subject to daily, seasonal, fluctuations with respect to both their flow and strength. (4)The pilot-scale ABR-MBBR system was effective in treating of high-strength beet sugar wastewater. Results showed about 70% of COD removal was achieved by ABR, the effluent's COD of MBBR was lower than 200 mg·L-1 and fulfilled with the II standard.
