Urbanization is one of the most important ecology, sociality and economy phenomenon in the world. The general definition of urbanization is: the process in which people move to the city. Urbanization is not only the process in which people' lifestyle and the structure of economy is changing, but also the process in which space and ecology system is changing. Urbanization not only means spreading of urban space and transforming from country and village landscape to urban landscape, but also means changing of regional ecological function, because material' cycling and energy's flow have been changed remarkably in the ecology system. It is very important to study the characteristics and dynamics of landscape pattern during urbanization progress.In this paper, geography information system and remote sensing, together with quantitative methods of landscape ecology are used to study the rapid urbanization progress in Xujing town located in the west of Shanghai during 2000-2004.This study is focused on: ●Study progress of Land use and land cover change(LUCC) in landscape ecology.●Overview development status and planning of Xujing town in ten years future.●Based on the landscape classification map interpreted by high-resolution QuickBird imagery, the landscape structure of Xujing town is analyzed between 2000 and 2004, in addition suitable ecology pattern indexes are chosen to analyze the ecology pattern.●Based on the landscape classification map interpreted by high-resolution QuickBird imagery of Qingpu district, Zhaotun town and Qingpu new town, which are close to Xujing town and have evolved to different urbanization level, are selected to compare their ecological structure and function by the ecology pattern indexes in 2004. The compared results can be referenced for planning of Xujing town.●Landscape ecology measurements are proposed to solve the ecological problems.The conclusions in this study are summed as following:●The results show that the whole landscape is a typical mosaic of residential land, municipal public utility land, and industrial land. In the two period of QuickBird imagery, the main patch is residential land. With the urbanization of Xujing town, More and more land become urban land. The diversity indices and fragmentation indices of the landscape become lower, which show that this area becomes more and more equality and rational.●Urban landscape's overage congregation goes against material's cycling and energy's flowing in the ecological system, then debase the functions of the whole ecological system. Its urbanization has destroyed a lot of natural element, and only maintained some small scale green land, which is not reasonable. So we should protect rivers with ecological measures, adjust the urban developing shape in plan, keep and increase green area in urban region. The best solution is to make green be the base of urban.
