Traditional process for nitrogen and phosphate removal involves in processes such as nitrification, denitrification, phosphorus release and uptake. The paradoxical relationships are inevitably produced in the same treatment system because of the different requirements of different treatment processes.NPR process, a combined and improved product of A~2O and BAF processes, is a high-efficient new process for nitrogen and phosphate removal. A pilot-scale test was conducted on NPR process for nitrogen and phosphorus removal effect. The result proves that this process gives a successful solution to the different requirement of nitrifying bacteria and PAOs on sludge age and the contradiction between denitrification and anaerobic phosphorus release from PAOs. The treated effluent can achieve the National Water Reuse Standard, and the process has advantages of steady operation and good treatment effect.Based on pilot-scale test, optimizing operation parameters and a design method of NPR process was chosen, the paper is going to provide theory support and valuable reference of the successful progression in China of the NPR pross.
