Urban lakes play an important role in urban ecological system. The release of phosphorus (P) in sediments blocks the progress of curing eutrophication in urban lakes. The study on the change in content and distribution of P fractionations helps us understand the relationship between the fate of P and eutrophication in urban lakes, which is essential to control eutrophication in urban lake.A case study on the vertical distributions of P fractionations and the influenced factors of the distributons of P fractionations were conducted in the sediments ofthree typical urban shallow lake—Xuanwu Lake, Darning Lake and Mochou Lake.A simulative study on the mobility and transformation among P fractionations during the P release process induced by pH value was also carried out in this work. The results indicated that the distribution of P fractions in lake sediments would be strongly influenced by the physicochemical properties of sediments. Besides, notable transformation of P fractionations could be identified during the releasing process of phosphorus in sediments. The aim of this study was to provide useful information about the controlling eutrophication in urban shallow lakes which was brought by the release of phosphorus in sediments.
