ABS has been widely used in many fields such as domestic appliances, electronic equipment, automobiles, and airplane. However, due to its low oxygen index (OI) value, ABS is prone to burn and easy to give off a lot of smoke while buning, which is harmful to the environment.In this paper, nano-Mg(OH)2 and ZnO were surface-coupled individually with different coupling agent. RDP-NP was synthesized by the esterification of resorcin phosphate and phenol formaldehyde novolac. After the optimum design of the component and content, Mg(OH)2/ZnO/ABS composite and RDP-NP/Mg(OH)2/ZnO/ABS composite were respectively fabricated through melt blending. The microstructure and the performance of the prepared composites were characterized and analyzed by SEM, TEM and FT-IR. Moreover, the chief effects on the flame retardant and the mechanical properties of the composites were studied in this work.The results indicated that nano-Mg(OH)2 surface-coupled by KH-560 could be uniformly dispersed in ABS matrix, and RDP-NP enhanced the effectiveness of flame retardant because it increased the yield of the char. When the weight ratio of Mg(OH)2/ZnO was 3:1, the composites possessed the best comprehensive properties that the burning speed dropped down from FH-3-38-mm/min to FH-3-25-mm/min, while an excellent smog suppression and a slight decreasing in mechanical properties was obtained. It was found that the components of Mg(OH)2,ZnO and RDP-NP had synergic flame-retardant effect. Therefore, the composites with Mg(OH)2, ZnO and RDP-NP of 3%,1%,25% respectively possessed the OI value of 27.2% and had better mechanical properties. Finally, the effects on the mechanical properties and the flame-retardant performance of the composites were discussed based on the observation of the fractograph of impacted samples and tensiled specimens and the chars attained after the burning of specimens.
