3-(2-aminoethyl)-phenol is an important intermediate used for synthesizing somedyestuffs and pharmaceuticals. A synthesis of 3-(2-aminoethyl)-phenol starting from3-hydroxylbenzaldehyde, followed by condensation and catalytic hydrogenation reactions, was studied. The total yield 3-(2-aminoethyl)-phenol was 72.8% in a purity of 99.2%.Some rational technological parameters, related reaction mechanisms and reactionconditions were discussed for the first time .The structures and compositions of 3-(hydroxyl)-β-nitrostyrene and 3-(2-aminoethyl)-phenol were accomplished by spectralanalysis and chromatographic analysis. In the process of condensation reaction, it has been found that this reaction belongs toSN1 mechanism, and according to this mechanism, some effective catalysts were found. This reaction is a reversible reaction, the yield was improved by means of improvingdevice and azeotropism.5%Pd-C, Raney-Ni, Cu were used in the process of catalytic hydrogenation andtheir best hydrogenation conditions were obtained, their catalyst's performances also werecompared, it has been found that 5%Pd-C, Raney-Ni were superior in catalytichydrogenation. The synthesis of 3-(2-aminoethyl)-phenol starting from 3-hydroxylbenzaldehyde,followed by condensation and reduction reactions, was convenient and mild.
