Energy sources and industrial raw in chemical industry are mostly originated from fossilresources. Many environmental problems, such as the inevitable increasing of the CO2 netconcentration in atmosphere, result from the use of fossil resources. And more, fossil resourcesare reducing rapidly. So it is necessary to exploit new renewable energy sources and rawmaterials for chemical industry.Biomass includes fuel forest, economic forest, commercialforest, crops straw, forestry process residues and all kinds of organic rubbish etc. It is the onlysource of raw materials that is renewable and can be converted into liquid fuel and otherproducts directly. After a brief introduction to the concept of bioenergy and the common technologiesadopted for its utilization, a review of current research and development of biomass pyrolysis& gasification technology is given. And also, the major programs, projects and researches havebeen introduced at length. In the present work, cassava dregs which is discard from brewery is selected as rawmaterials. The influences of pyrolysis & gasification parameters on the products yields, theproduction of gas, the distribution of liquid products and heating value are studied. The cassavadregs is pyrolyzed & gasified in nitrogen, nitrogen+steam, air, air+steam. After pyrolysis &gasification, residues are weighed. Liquids are collected, weighed and analyzed with AgilentGC-MS, while gas products are determined by gas chromatography. When cassava dregs is pyrolyzed & gasified, it is found that the totle gas yield increasewith temperature. And main gas components are H2, CO, CH4, CO2, gas heating value canreached 6000kJ/m3. The yield of liquid product increase to the maximum and then decreasewith increasing of pyrolysis & gasification temperature. The major components of liquidproducts are phenol derivatives, in which butylated hydroxytoluene is most, can above 40%.BHT is an important material for chemical industry. In conclusion, results suggest that pyrolysis & gasification of cassava dregs can be used toproduce chemicals and energy materials. The choice of gasification agent, temperature, andheating rate according to the different production needs, could enhance heat efficiency, andprovide more useful products.
