The rare earth polymer materials have attracted considerable interests for their good luminescent characteristics, high color purity of rare earths and the excellent machinability of polymers. In this thesis, a kind of rare earth complex Eu(Phen)(4-VBA), with luminescent property and polymerizable groups, was synthesized by reaction of 1, 10-Phenanthroline, 4-vinylebenzoic acid with rare earth chloride. The rare earth complex was polymerized respectively with methyl methacrylate (MMA) or styrene (St) to prepare bonding-type rare-earth polymers PMMA-co-EuX and PS-co-EuX. The copolymer were characterized by IR, UV, GPC and elemetal analysis. Results of fluorescence spectra show that the emission intensities of the copolymers were 3~5 times stronger than those of the doping-type rare-earth polymers. Results from TGA suggest that the thermal stability of the copolymers was better than that of the pure PMMA or PS polymer. The copolymers and PC were blended to prepare polymer alloys, of which no concentration quenching of fluorescence emission was observed.
