In this study, a kind of methacrylate polymeric surfactants, poly[MethylacrylicAcid(MAA), StearylMethacrylate(SMA), PolylethyleneGlycolMethacrylate(PEGMA)], was systhesized by the conventional radical polymerization. The copolymers werecharacterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR), ~1H NMR andGPC; And solution properties of the copolymers with different monomer ratios werediscussed in detail. In addition, the soluble temperatures and cloud points of thespecial polymeric surfactants were found as well. The author their solution propertiesin detail, attained their Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC); Also the synthesis ofemulsion polymerization of styrene were studied using this polymeric surfactant asa emulsifier. The objects of this paper are divided into four parts:(1) Synthesis and characters of methacrylate polymeric surfactant, poly(MAA-SMA-PEGMA) has been synthesized by the conventional free-radicalcopolymerization. The copolymers were characterized with Fourier transform infraredspectroscopy(FT-IR), ~1H NMR and GPC.(2) Mensuration of methacrylate polymeric surfactant's Cloud Points. Solutionproperties of the copolymers with different monomer ratios were discussed in detail. In addition, the soluble temperatures and cloud points of the special macromoleculesurfactants were found as well.(3) The study of surface activity of methacrylate polymeric surfactant. Thesolution's viscosity, the surface tension and the electric conductivity tokenrespectively in research of its solution behavior, The CMC is attained 0.002g/mL.(4) Application in emulsion copolymerization of methacrylate polymericsurfactant. The synthesis of emulsion polymerization of styrene was studied using this polymeric surfactant as an emulsifier. And the kinetics of styrene emulsionpolymerization was studied. The rate of polymerization was found to be proportionalto the 0.51th power of emulsifier concentrations, and to the 0.42th power of initiatorconcentrations. The apparent activation energy was found to be 78.23 kJ/mol. Also theparticle size, properties of the latex and films were discussed. The results showed thatthe average particle size was within 60nm~90nm, and the latex has preferableproperties of the stability, latex and films.
