Along with the enhancement of health consciousness, the way to reduce tar content of cigarette and mainstream smoke, and to promote smoking security has become the focus of the tobacco and its correlative industries. The situation and primary techniques of reducing tobacco harm were summarized, the important role of filter tip in reducing tar was discussed. The article gave emphasis to three methods of modification of polypropylene fiber,to improve the adsorbability of modification polypropylene fiber filter tip.Modification polypropylene fibers were prepared by three different inorganic reagents, cigarette adhesive and mineral particles such as nano silicon dioxide, zinc oxide and alumina, and thermally induced phase separation and polyblending. The morphological structure were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the result shows that there are many different concavities on the sueface of the fiber that was modified by inorganic reagent, the specific surface area and the surface roughness of the fiber were enhanced. And there are also many different dimension holes and splits with the size from 0.1μm to 3μm on the surface of the fiber that was prepared by polyblending and thermally induced phase seperation. The surface chemical ingredient was determined by infrared spectrometer, the result shows that there are many–OH and -COOH on the surface of the fiber that was modified by inorganic reagent. The polarity of the fiber that modified by polyblending and thermally induced phase seperation was tested by dynamic contact angle measurements, the result shows that the receding contact angle was reduced to about 60°and the contact angle hysteresis range was increased to 30°. The adsorption behavior of benzene steam on polypropylene fibers was analyzed by static saturated adsorption equipment and atmospheric flow adsorption equipment. The significant influence to the adsorbability of the modified fiber was obtained, and the single factor testing was used to analyze the testing data. The result shows that the adsorbability of modified polypropylene fibers with three modification methods were improved obviously.Then, the filter tips were made by three modification polypropylene fibers that with beat adsorbability, and the adsorption and filtration to cigarette smoke were tested. The result show that, compared with unmodified polypropylene fiber, the adsorption and filtration of modified polypropylene fibers with three modification methods were enhanced obviously. The sequence from the best to the last is: the fiber that was prepared by polyblending and thermally induced phase separation > the fiber that was prepared by cigarette adhesive and mineral particles > the fiber that was prepared by inorganic reagents > pure polypropylene fiber.
