Polybromostyrene is a sort of brominated polymeric flame retardant additive which hasexcellent performance in flame retardation. It has been widely used in flame-retardation ofthermosetting plastic such as PET, PBT, polyphenylene ether, nylon66, nylon6, polyimide, syndiotactic polystyrene, unsaturated polyester, and epoxy resin. Polybromostyrene has beenresearched and well developed abroad yet it has not been industrialized in China. So it issignificant to study on this subject.Withβ-phenylethyl alcohol as raw material, the monomer of bromostyrene and thepolybromostyrene were synthesized. In the paper, the intermediate ofβ-bromophenylethanewas synthesized. The effects of different feed ratio of materials, reaction temperature and timewere discussed. The good process conditions were obtained. The preparedβ-bromophenylethane was conformed and characterized through FTIR, 1HNMR. When themolar ratio of H2SO4, HBr andβ-phenylethyl alcohol was 1:1:1, and the reaction temperaturewas 120℃,and the reaction time was 3h, the conversion was 93.3%.β-(bromoethyl)bromobenzene with various bromine content were synthesized under LewisAcid by bromine andβ-bromophenylethane. The effects of different catalyst, the amount ofcatalyst, feed ratio, reaction time and temperature on the bromine content and yield werediscussed and the structures were conformed by FITR, 1HNMR and potentiometric titration. The results indicated that the preferable conditions were as follow: the catalyst was Ferrouspowder, the reaction time was 5h, and the reaction temperature was 40℃. The monomer ofbromostyrene was synthesized fromβ-(bromoethyl)bromobenzene by eliminating hydrogenbromide under sodium hydrate. The monomer was conformed and analyzed by FITR and1HNMR and the effects of reaction time and temperature on conversion were discussed. Thepolymeric flame retardant additives of polybromostyrene was synthesized under radicalinitiator benzoyl peroxide(BPO), and analyzed and characterized the target product by makinguse of FTIR,TGA, DSC and GPC. The results showed that, polybromostyrene had excellentthermal stability. Tg value was 144℃, and 5%weight loss temperature was 383℃, and theMw was 103000.
