2-bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol (bronopol) is a broad-spectrum preservative. Compared with other preservatives, bronopol has the followed merits: (1) its high efficiency; (2) little use amount, the low price; (3) proper combinations with other materials; (4) extensive pH scope; (5) the good water solubility, the convenient use. Due to these specialties, bronopol as preservative is used in many fields. A lot of studies and applications have been reported in many countries for years. With the standard of living improving and the consciousness of health enhancing , the demand of preservative is more and more high. As bronopol have good specialties, it can meet the demand well. Thus, it has not only much room for development, but also great potential of market.Nitromethane,formaldehyde and bromine are used to synthesize bronopol by the synthesis route of hydroxyalkylation reaction and then brominating reaction. The technics was improved and the reaction conditions were optimized. Finally the high yield of product was gained. The product was analyzed from amounts and the structure at the same time. The research provides technical support of industrialization.1. Synthesis of bronopol in water-sodium hydroxideThe effect of the amount of the solvent, reaction time and temperature and the ratio of raw material on the yield were investigated. But there were some shortcomings in water-sodium hydroxide , which were the difficult control, the inferior quality and the low yield.2. Synthesis of bronopol in ethanol- ethanolsodiumSodium was prepared to react with excessive ethanol, the synthesis route of hydroxyalkylation reaction and then brominating reaction was carried through in the system. On the investigating the effects of the amount of the ethanol, reaction time and temperature and the ratio of raw material on the yield, the optimum reaction conditions were gained by using orthogonal experimental design. The yield of bronopol was to 97% in the optimum reaction conditions.3. Analysis of bronopolBronopol was analyzed by melting point analysis, IR Spectrum, HPLC and TLC to assure its structure and composition..
