In order to achieve waste treatment and resource reuse, scrap tires can be converted into oil, carbon and fuel gas by pyrolysis. It is considered to be a promising method with its higher energy recovery. This study focus on the pyrolytic oil derived from the pyrolysis of scrap tires in a pilot-scale rotary kiln. Based on the overall research of the qualities of the whole pyrolytic oil, more characteristics of cuting fractions were analyzed. Then quality upgrading scheme was explored in order to solve the high content of sulphur and nitrogen in pyrolytic oil, low flash point as well.Yields of pyrolysis of scrap tires in a pilot-scale rotary kiln under 550℃were firstly summarized. Then elemental composition and physiochemical properties were analyzed on both pyrolytic crude oil and its fractions. Based on these researches, the feasibility that pyrolytic oil is used as fuel was discussed. From FT-IR spectra the functional group compounds were generally acquainted, and by column chromatography analysis chemical compositions were clearly known. Then through GC analysis the absolute content of BTX in pyrolytic crude oil was defined. In conclusion, it's beneficial to extract chemical minerals from the light fraction pyrolytic oil.Aiming at the high sulphur and nitrogen content of fraction pyrolytic oil, method of hydrorefining was studied secondly. The mechanism of hydrorefining was discussed and the effect of reaction temperature, reaction pressure, liquid airspeed and hydrogen oil volume ratio was examined. Since, optimum condition was acquired. In addition, the change of chemical components after hydrorefining was analysized.Finally, with complete knowledge of the compositions and properties of the pyrolytic crude oil and its fractions, estimation of its application was possible. As wide boiling point oil, pyrolytic oil is better to be cut into several parts for different uses. Main fraction can be used as diesel oil. Light fradtion can be used to extract BTX, and heavy fraction can be used as bitumen.
