Nanoparticles of YF3:Eu, YF3:Er and BaF2:Er were prepared in the quaternary microemulsions of CTAB, n-butanol, n-octance and water. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were indexed to a pure YF3 and BaF2 phase. The diameter of the particles, calculated with the help of Debye-Scherrer equation, revealed that these particles were nanoparticles. The emission of YF3:Eu nanoparticles peaked at 592nm(5D0→7F1). It showed that Eu of YF3:Eu gets into crystal in the form of Eu3+, and occupies a symmetry center position. The fluorescence emission band of BaF2:Er3+ nanoparticles peaked at 1540nm(4I13/2→4I15/2), there weren't other peaks between 650nm and 1800nm. The emission of YF3:Er nanoparticles peaked at 1547nm(4I13/2→4I15/2), it has red shift and the emission of upconversion were red and green light.YF3:Eu, BaF2:Er and YF3:Er nanoparticles modified by oleic acid were prepared using suface modification methed. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) was used to investigate the structure of the modified nanoparticles. The results indicate that oleic acid is bonded to the surface of nanoparticles. The modified nanoparticles have good dispersive capacity in organic solvent and mineral oil.The synthesis of YF3:Eu/PMMA, YF3:Er/PMMA and BaF2:Er/PMMA composite materials were primarily studied. The difference of emission and excitation between YF3:Eu /PMMA, YF3:Er/PMMA, BaF2:Er/PMMA composite materials and YF3:Eu, YF3:Er, BaF2:Er nanoparticles were discovered by the fluorescence spectra. The positions of peaks were not changed, but the intensity was weaken. ESEM images showed that the nanoparticles are uniform in PMMA.
