Volatile organic compounds(VOC) of traditional coatings are greatly restricted due to the environment protection. Therefore, developing water-based coatings with low environmental pollution has received significant interest from both academia as well as of industry. In pursuit of developing aqueous coatings, a trend can be observed of preparation of aqueous dispersions or dispersible powers to a much more defined and detailed level. The polymer resins dispersed in water in the form of particulate were introduced as water-based polymer particulate. The ways of preparing water-based polymer mainly include latex polymerization, suspension polymerization, however, the polymerizations above are useful for addition polymers alone not for polycondensation products. Solvent-evaporation method can be almost applied to any polymer resin emulsified to be water-based.The research about PES(PEK)water-based polymers has been one highlight in the macromolecular field ,which is very important for preparing aqueous polymer coatings. Using emulsification-solvent evaporation technic results in most of polymer resins emulsified and water-based. The surfactants and solvents are keys for keeping water-based polymers dispersions stable. By careful optimization of the water-based PES(PEK)polymers dispersions parameters, the aqueous polymer coatings can be optimised with very interesting combinations of properties. The water-based PES(PEK)polymers dispersions were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, zeta and potential analyzer zetapals. We draw a conclusion from the experiment:1. After selection, DBS (Dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid sodiumsalt)can be used as suitable surfactant, when aqueous Poly(aryl ether)dispersions are prepared.2. Chloroform as solvent is suitable for preparing the aqueous PES dispersions because of its lower boiling point. The average particle diameter in the range of 50~100nm could be made when 10~20% of PES dispersions were used; the similar average particle diameter in the range of 130~150nm could be made when 3~25% of Bisphenol A-PEEK dispersions were used.Ever since water-based PES(PEK)coatings have been introduced as alternative for solvent-borne products and solvent-evaporation method have been confirmed, continuous efforts were spent in order to improve the water-based PES(PEK)polymers properties to the level of those from solvent–borne coatings. Somewhat important parameters determining water-based polymer properties were found to be surfactant selection and the quantity of additives etc..When cross-linking poly(ether ketone)s were treated under high temperature and UV, the solubility decreased and the glass transition temperature became higher; the properties of cross-linking PEK coatings treated under UV were better than that of the original PEK coatings.
