KDP crystal is an important kind of high-tech materials. It's very soft, extremely soluble in water. Besides the surface of KDP is very deliquescent and can be easily fogged. So it's considered to be one kind of the most difficult materials to be fabricated. Currently, there are many methods fabricating KDP crystal such as Ultra-precision grinding and Diamond tool machining. Although high precision can be obtained by these methods, there are still some disadvantages for polishing KDP crystal. However, Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF) has a lot of advantages as a new kind of deterministic finishing method. So MRF is used to polish KDP crystal, and the main research is done as follows:Firstly, on the base of the requirements for polishing KDP crystal, the structure of our machine is analyzed, including the modal of the machine and the maximum value of the beam's deformation. Besides, the device for polishing KDP is designed and the magnetic field is also analyzed. The results of the analysis by ANSYS and the measured values are compared.Secondly, the requirements for magnetorheological fluid to polish KDP are analyzed. And basing on the analysis of the components' influence to KDP crystal, magnetorheological fluid's components and the formulation technology for polishing KDP are determined. Finally the performance of our magnetorheological fluid is tested.Thirdly, the mechanism of polishing KDP with MRF is analyzed in order to help analyzing the most important factors' influence to polishing KDP,Finally, some experiments are taken to polish KDP with MRF, and the most important factors' influence to the removal rate and surface roughness are studied considering the mechanism of polishing KDP with MRF. At last, the cleaning technology is studied, and the cleaned surface' quality can be tested.
