With the development of manufacture and progress of technology, welding technique has been applied wide-rangingly to bridges, constructions, and so on, and is important to the development of economy. Because the input of instantaneous heat , there are very great welding residual stresses and deformation, which will have great influence over mechanical properties of the welded joint. Therefore, it is very important to research the laws of welding residual stresses. The author summarized the main fundamental theories on welding, finite element and welding residual stress by looking up a large number of bibliographies, and mainly analyzed the distribution of the horizontal residual stress of the butt welded joint of steel member through "ANSYS" . The analysis indicated : 1. The distribution of the horizontal residual stresses was in 5-8cm of two sides of center line of weld; 2. In the inside of the member, the stress in weld is tensile stress and nearby weld is compressive stress. It is quite contrary on the surface of the member; 3. When the thickness of steel member increased, the horizontal residual stresses increased too; 4. The different thickness of weld stratification has some influence over the horizontal residual stress;5. With the widthness of weld increasing, the horizontal residual stresses reduced;6. The residual stress and the rang of distribution were smaller by multi-layer welding than single-layer welding.
