The technology of numerical simulation of casting is the result of integration of computing science and casting. It brings new power to the tradition casting industry. Now, the technology has been widely used in production. Several numerical simulation softwares have developed, such as MAGMA, ProCAST and InteCAST.Recently, Linux has been accepted by more and more people and it has played an important role in numerical simulation and other science research field. Now, most of the commercial numerical simulation software are based on Windows, so it is important to develop the numerical simulation software based on Linux. In this paper, the CAE software system based on Linux has been developed with KDevelop/QT tools. It can mesh the STL files, simulate the solidification of casting and deal with the result data. After analyzing the characteristic of STL files, the pre-processing meshes it with finite difference methods and solves several problems which occur in the meshing process. Also, these STL files are showed based on OpenGL.According to the feature of solidification of casting, a numerical model is developed and solved by finite difference method. In part of post-processing, the result of pre-processing, SGN file can be showed, rotated and zoomed. In this module, the research focuses on the key algorithms including searching surfaces, combining of the surface elements. The realization of these algorithms makes the displaying in real-time of the numerical graph possible. The research and development of CAE software system based on Linux is the numerical simulation extend using in casting field and has become one development orientation of numerical simulation technology.
