Polyester(PET) fibers possesses many good performances. But its dyeing behaviour is very poor from an aqueous dyebath because of the high degree of crystallinity and the lack of dyeing groups in fibers. Dyeing at high temperature is a better way and more mature technology. But in recent years, individuation, diversification and function of costume are pursued, so the composite fibers are applied widely. The blended PET fabrics with other fibers such as wool, silk, acetate cellulose and spandex and so on are not endured high temperature. Therefore, the dyeing of PET fiber at atmosphere pressure is a developmental current at present.First the methyl methacrylate as a carrier was applied for dyeing PET fiber at atmosphere pressure in this paper. The effects of the methyl methacrylate and auxiliaries on dyeing process were investigated. Through the single factor test, the optimum dyeing recipe was determined: disperse dye amount was 2 %(o.w.f.), methyl methacrylate 4%, hydrogen peroxide 8%, pH5-6,liquid ratio50:l,dyeing for 60min at 98℃.According to this process, dyeing uptake reach 85-95%, rubbing fastness were about grade 4-5, washing fastness about grade 4-5. This provides an effect approach that dyeing polyester with fibers which are not endured high temperature at atmosphere pressure. Then, the dyeing mechanism of PET fibers with the methyl methacrylate as a carrier was studied by FT-IR, DSC, and SEM in this paper. It was known that the methyl methacrylate was used as a dyeing carrier to increase the dye-uptake at first, and then it was polymerized by hydrogen peroxide to form a film containing the dye on the surface of polyester fiber to improve rubbing fastness of PET fiber at atmosphere pressure. Lastly the phenyl acrylate, as a new carrier was selected according to the mechanism of dyeing and the principle of conform being consistent. FT-IR and MR were used to study the structure. According to the single factor test, the extension of factor was chosen. Through the orthogonal experiment test, the optimum dyeing recipe was determined: disperse dye amount was 2 %(o.w.f.), phenyl acrylate 4%, hydrogen peroxide 10%, pH5-6,liquid ratio50:l,dyeing for 60min at 98℃. In dyeing polyester and polyester/cotton, the dyeing effect of new carrier was compared with methyl salicylate and methyl methacrylate.
