Application Of Optical Illusion In Furniture Design

Human understanding process is always rising from perceptual knowledge to rational knowledge. It is the same of understanding of furniture. A pre-judgment is made through the senses of first impression for furniture. Only after people are attracted by the form of it, they will decide to learn more about the function, significance and other information of it. People mainly receive information from the outside world through visual perception. Therefore it is necessary to study visual phenomenon and development a scientific theoretical basis for guiding furniture design. The latest scientific researches show that optical illusion occurred by the impacts of physical and psychological factors and the knowledge and experience from the past and the external interfering factors. Appropriate application of optical illusion in furniture design can bestow a higher aesthetic value on it.This paper's aim is to study the process of human visual perception. It illustrates the form of optical illusion and focuses on the application of it to the furniture design. Also, it analysis and summarizes a series of methods and theories on how to use it. Finally, some practice is done as further proof that optical illusion can reasonably be applied to furniture design. The purpose of this thesis is to arouse designers'attention to optical illusion and broaden the ideas on furniture design. A scientific theoretical basis can guide furniture design and make the furniture's artistic image more compatible with human visual customs and psychological needs.
