With the development of automatic welding, seam tracking has become an important research subject in welding field. Lots of research been made by many home and abroad welding specialists, and developed lots of welding seam tracking methods, many of which are actually used. But owing to the complexity of welding process, many tracking system cannot obtain pleasing result. So far, there is no tracking system which can meet all welding process. So, welding seam tracking is still a quite active issue.One of wide applied welding seam tracking method is arc sensing, because it has the virtue of simple structure, unified position of monitoring point and welding point and good real-time quality, this method is already successfully used in overlap joint, V groove seam and fillet welding seam, but to butt welded seam, it is not applicable. In A-TIG welding process, voltage will be obviously rise in activating flux coating district, so this thesis make a study to arc sensing butt seam tracking based on coating surface activating flux.In the first, an integral welding seam tracking experiment system was design and built. X, Y double-shaft experiment table run program and arc voltage gather program was wrote by LabVIEW, these program can control experiment table movement and gather arc voltage signal, real-time display and store.Arc voltage was gathered and analyzed by different coating mode welding experiment, digital filtering was make to arc voltage signal with different filter module in LabVIEW. In comparison with different filter algorithms produced filter effects, result show that mean filtering can obtain better to other filtering mode.With Simulink tool of MATLAB, tracking control simulation was applied to actual welding process based on advanced data by different arc scan mode.Preliminary study show that coating activating flux can get obvious seam characteristic signal, simulation results show that this method can use to seam tracking and is worth to further study and apply.
