In recent years, there has been an increasing concern for the preservation of the environment and sustainability of resources, thus, the utilization of natural fibers is receiving renewed interest as an alternative to non-renewable resources in materials technology. A new type of cellulose product, microfibrillated cellulose. (MFC), is introduced, the preparation and its effect on paper sheets strength impoving is also studied in this paper. Comparison with conventionality or denaturalization cellulose products, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) offers some unique performances due to its high minuteness fibrosis and huge ratio surface as well as its combination of high hydroxyl groups at the surface. In this paper, bleached KP bamboo pulp was used as the raw material, combined PFI mill and chemical pretreatment with high pressure homogenization, we manufactured Nano-scale Microfibrillated Cellulose products within the target diameter range of 0.1 to 1 mm. These Bamboo MFC products were characterized using SEM, and other physical and chemical methods. The results of the study indicated, the product of microfibrillated cellulose in this paper has a significantly greater ability to retain water than the most closely related cellulosic products of the prior art, and the study also indicated that the MFC solution presented a typical behavior of pseudoplastic fluid. In addition, through the study we concluded that there has a linearity correlation between the carboxyl groups content and the relative WRV of the MFC product. The effect on paper sheets strength impoving of MFC in paper industry was also studied. The MFC product, cationic starch, a mixture of MFC and cationic starch were added into the pulp solution to making hand sheets respectively. The results gave clear indication that the application of the bamboo MFC in hand sheets could improve the physical properties of the sheets. In addition, the sheets treated with a mixture of bamboo MFC and cationic starch improves the physical strength has a better effect more than treated with MFC or cationic starch alone.
