The products of alcohol oxidation, such as aldehyde, alkone and other oxygenates, are important industrial raw materials and organic synthetic intermediates. The development of green, mild economy and highly selective catalytic system has received the widespread attention in alcohol oxidation catalysis, the easy recycled and reused solid supported catalysts is one of the research focus.In this article, we introduced the research developments of two aspect that the application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) used as catalyst supports and the application of catalyst TEMPO in alcohol oxidation. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) seemed to be promissing candidates for use as heterogeneous catalyst supports for small molecule oganic catalysts due to their thermal stability, big surface and they can be chemical modified easily. Here TEMPO is tethered to the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) through a simple chemical-covalent method, resulting in a MWNTs-supported organic catalyst. And then examined its catalytic activity in alcohol oxidation, the catalyst was also characterized in detail by FT-IR, TGA etc. techniques. The resarch demonstrated that the catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity in primary alcohol oxidation. Compared with traditional solid supported catalysts, the MWNTs-TEMPO can run a reaction under homogeneous catalysis conditions like polymer-supported catalyst and then to recover the catalyst as if it were bound to an insoluble support.
