Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is a wastewater treatment technology combined activated sludge process with membrane separation. The main advantages of MBR technology comprared to conventional biological treatment systems are better effluent quality, smaller footprint, higher MLSS concentration, decreased sludge production and convenient automated control, etc. Whereas, the inevitably membrane fouling impacts the stability and economy of MBR systems, and greatly limits the wide application of MBR systems. It is necessary to take action to control memebrane fouling to reduce frequency of chemical cleaning, and prolong the life of membrane, and cut down the capital investment and operation cost. This paper is focused on the mechanism of reducing membrane fouling by membrane performance enhancer (MPE).The effect of variation of MPE dose on CODCr, turbidity, SV, SVI of activated sludge after coagulation was investigated by jar experiment. According to the differences of raw wastewater quality, temperature and characteristics of activated sludge, different doses of MPE were added into reactor in pilot experiment in different phases.MPE can coagulate EPS, and reduce TOC concentration in the supernant, and make the particle size larger, and improve the separation and filtration characteristics of the mixed liquor. After addition of MPE, the probability of membrane fouling by EPS, dissolved organic matter, colloid and small size particle are reduced, and the characteristics of cake layer on membrane surface are loose, high porosity, good filtration characteristic, so TMP increase is retarded and membrane flux is maintained.MPE can be added in the condition of sludge bulking and/or biological bubble, etc, so to improve activated sludge characteristic, retard deterioration of activated sludge, and obtain time to find accident reason and solution; at the same time, though in the normal operation of MBR, MPE can be added periodically to reduce membrane fouling, and maintain MBR stability, and prolong cleaning period.
