Gelatin/Montmorillonite (MMT) intercalation composite is a new kind of nanocomposite; the preparation process is a typical ionic intercalation. Since the intercalation composite could be prepared in alkalic media, there should be a sort of interaction between gelatin molecules with negative charges and MMT. In this paper, the mechanism of interaction between anions and MMT is studied by researching the different intercalation effect of organic anions matter in different state of charges distribution. In this paper, the interaction between sulfate functional groups and MMT were studied by anion surfactant - sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS). The interaction between sulfate anions and MMT was ascertained by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Because of negative charges repulsion, SDS could not intercalate into the MMT layers in different concentrations. When SDS exists in the form of single molecule and micelles, there are different style interaction between SDS and MMT. The interaction between sulfate anions and MMT was the main reason of SDS-CTAB blend intercalated into the MMT layers. The results indicated that, both carboxyl and sulfate groups are strongly interact with MMT. The interactive intensity between anions (such as carboxylic anion and sulfate anion) and MMT is stronger than that between cations and MMT (such as amino cation). In order to ascertain the mechanism , the intensity and the sites of interaction between carboxylic anion of acrylic acid and MMT, the characterization of X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and thermogravimetric analysis are applied. The interactive sites between carboxyl matter and MMT is the carbonyl group (-C=O) of the carboxyl anion group (-COO~-), it interact with the aluminium hydroxyl group (Al-OH) or the aluminium ion of MMT.The different intercalation effect of organic anions matter in different states of charge distribution is studied by X-ray diffraction. It is found that changing the distribution of charges on carboxyl matter or introducing of group which is easily interacted with MMT is in favor of intercalation. It was ascertained that gelatin A can intercalate into the MMT layers, and the degree of swelling is lower than that of pure gelatin A and gelatin B/MMT composite.
