The efffect of composition , preparation on micro structure and magnetostiction of new magnetostictive material Fe-Ga was studied systematically in this paper. Base alloy Fe100-xGax (x=15,16,17,18,19,21,27) with different compositions, polycristal Fe-Ga alloy Fe100-xGax (x=17,19) and Fe100-xGax(x=15,16,17,18,19,21,27) ribbons under different wheel speeds were prepared by electric vacuum furnace melting, zone melting and melt-spun method respectively.The effect of Ga contents on magnetostiction are obvious. The magnetostiction acheieved extremum 93×10-5 and 24×10-6 under Ga content 19% and 21%, respectively.It was found non-ordered microstructure A2 in Fe-Ga alloy as cast and prepared by directional solidfication method respectively. Different Ga contents result in different Lattice Distortion and Lattice constants.Rich Ga phase was found by microstructure analysis, and the degree of Rich Ga phase may different with the Ga contents. The rich Ga phase descreased gradually with wheel speed increasing, as well as. the thickness of the equilibrium diagram of melt-spun Fe-Ga ribbons, which was bad for magnetostiction properties improving.Orientation preferred is different for different Ga contents along thickness direction for the Fe-Ga alloy ribbons prepared by melt-spun method, [100] and [211] orientation preferred were observed for Fe100-xGax alloy under x < 18% and x > 18% respectively. [100] orientation preferred is good for magnetostiction improving. It is found that the largest magnetostiction of Fe82Ga18 ribbons achieved -175×10-6 under the magnetic field 45kA/m when wheel speed was 12 m/s.The resault of XRD analysis showed that non-ordered solid solution phaseα-Fe (Ga) with little short range order DO3 phase in Fe-Ga alloy. With the wheel speed increasing, the mount of DO3 phase decreased. Which cound improve magnetostiction of ribbons prepared by melt-spun method.
